Services/Language Service and the Legal Profession

The Need

As the non-English speaking population has dramatically increased throughout the United States, more limited-English proficient persons are finding themselves in need of legal
representation.

The Challenge

In an attempt to provide adequate legal representation to non-English speakers, the language barrier becomes a considerable factor. Attorneys often rely on bilingual staff to communicate with non-English speaking clients. The challenge is to ensure that bilingual staff are
adequately prepared to fulfill this role.

The Solution

By receiving specialized training in court interpretation, legal staff expand upon and further develop their knowledge of:

Spanish/English legal terminology and terms related to domestic violence, immigration, DUI, etc.
Specialized skills and strategies necessary to interpret accurately
  Legal procedure
The courts' responsibilities to serve non-English speaking clients
Spanish/English formal and informal general vocabulary

Benefits to attorneys include:

Bilingual staff more comfortable in their role as interpreters
Non-English speaking clients more satisfied with their representation
Decreased risk of misunderstandings that may jeopardize a client
An improved reputation with the non-English speaking community
