Intermediate Court Interpreting - Skill Development/State Certification Preparation

This seminar is designed for candidates preparing to take a state-level oral certification exam and/or working interpreters interested in improving their skills and earning continuing education units where available. Seminars are two days long and run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a total of sixteen hours of instruction. For a more detailed schedule, please go to the Seminars page.

Course objectives include:

1. Introduce and familiarize students with certification examination structure and scoring systems to let candidates know what they can expect on test day, how to best prepare for each section, and what the raters will be looking for as they evaluate
2. Extensive practice in each of the three interpreting modes. Materials have been developed to closely reflect the types of scripts used on the state-level exams. Portable simultaneous equipment will be used to practice simultaneous interpretation. The emphasis of the two days will be practice and more practice to prepare students mentally to pass the exam.
3. Note-taking and memory development. Suggestions and practice for effective note-taking and memory development techniques will be offered and practiced.
4. Provide feedback, study materials, and resource guides so that students will recognize what areas they most need to develop to prepare for the exam and will have the means to do so.

Benefits to the student include:

1. Self-instruction materials. Participants will be provided with written and recorded materials to continue developing their skills on their own.
2. A clear idea of your current skill level and the skills you'll need to develop to pass the test.
3. A clear understanding of what to expect on test-day will help to calm nerves. Nervousness is one of the primary reasons that qualified individuals do not pass exams. The more familiar you are with the exam and the more you've practiced, the less likely you are to freeze-up.
4. Continuing education units will be applied for and awarded in states where they are available.
The opportunity to network with language service professionals locally, at the state level, and nationally by working with instructors who are well known at all levels.
